The Mobile Congressional District Lookup application lets people lookup their congressional district and representatives using text messaging.

To use it, take out your mobile phone and text the word DISTRICT to the number 30644. You will immediately get back a response asking for your address. Reply with your address and we’ll immediately text you your federal and state districts, along with contact information for your representative(s).

It’s critical to reach everyone in New York City with information, not just people with an expensive data plan. Over 4 billion text messages are sent every day in the United States. Over 95% of the population has a mobile phone and of those, over 90% are able to send text messages.  Even though iPhone and Android have rich user interfaces and GPS, fewer than 10% of the population has access to one. Therefore we chose to make the data available using the most ubiquitous form of communication today: a text message.
