NYC Broken Meters iPhone app brings you, for the first time, a location based, map view of all broken meters in Manhattan and the five boroughs, based on Scout/311 broken parking meter data set. The data set is refreshed when new data becomes available.
Looking for parking? Always check NYC Broken Meters first!
Pursuant to section 4-08 h, 3, of the NYC TRR, you can park at a broken meter up to one hour!
New York City has approximately 57,000 single-space meters. City officials estimate that at any given time, about 10 percent of single-space meters need repair. That is around 5,700 broken parking meters of free 1HR parking!!!
The App Features:
- A map of the broken parking meters in NYC
- Dynamic listing of broken meters near your GPS location
- Broken meters can be filtered by the date they were
reported and by distance
We are already hard at work on our next update and will submit it to the app store very soon. Coming in the next update:
- Report a broken meter to 311 NYC - help the city fight
vandalism!
- Reverse geocoding - list meters by address.
- Parked at a broken meter and got a ticket? Photo tag the
meter with your camera, type in the meter no., our app will
automatically geotag your photo so you’ll have a
photographic evidence and will be able to get the ticket
dismissed!
- Crowdsourcing Broken Meters - upload your tagged broken
meter for the benefit of the NYC drivers community and the
city.
Technical Info for the Judges:
The app takes the New York Long Island State Plane Coordinate System (FIPS 3104) Feet, North American Datum 1983 (NAD83) and outputs to longitude and latitude or Google Coordinates Datum (WGS84) that can
be presented using iPhone mapkit.
Our software converts the 311 Broken Parking Meters XLS file to XML in order to make it easily computable.
Future Usage
The same system can be expanded to report other city problems as well. Our software can send a data feed to the city with all broken meters tagged and uploaded to our server by users.
