Like many New Yorkers we make ample use of the City’s wonderful parks. Some are great for kids, some are great for adults, there are literally dozens of sites to see in Central Park alone and thousands in the five boroughs at large. It’s far too easy for locals to slip into a routine hitting only their three neighborhood parks, or for visitors to wander aimlessly into Central Park (OK, Central Park is not exactly a bad place to wander aimlessly, but knowing where the bathrooms are is important, or you could wander an awfully long time!)
iParks New York, Midtown is a free iPhone app (available here) that helps you get your arms around what the places are in Manhattan's Midtown and Midtown East neighborhoods, where they’re located, which are worth seeing, and what to expect when you get there. Need a map or directions? Check. Need to know what the must see sites are or what our opinion of what the best parks are? Got it. How about a park that'd be good for an adult to sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee? Sure thing. We also tried to take the concept one step further by linking Places with upcoming Events at those places. Not just where Union Square is and what to expect, but what date and time you need to be there for the famous Greenmarket, or when to take your kids to Bryant Park to see Flaubert the Frog. If you decide you want to see all events at NYPL Schwarzman Building you can bookmark it, making it a snap to see updated Events whenever you reopen the App. Or if you never want to hear about Toddler Story Time ever again, no problem, just click the “X” and you can exclude a specific event, event title, or events at a given place forever. And of course if you find a place or event that suits you not only can you bookmark it for yourself, but you can sent it on to a friend. iParks NY tries to make it a snap for everyone to get more out of all that the the City has to offer. Enjoy!
